One of New Zealand's longest and most scenic multi-day river journeys. Flowing between the Inland and Seaward Kaikōura Ranges, the Waiau Toa / Clarence is a chance to slow down, embrace simplicity and travel deep into the South Island's wild heart.
It's not about adrenaline. It's about fun, food, fire and flow. Everything we need is carried on the rafts, and we camp wherever the river takes us, cooking over open fires under a sky full of stars.
your five days
Start in the alpine tussock country of Marlborough's remote backblocks. Leave the road behind, settle into river time and enjoy the first evening by the fire.
Drift through isolated valleys few ever visit, with gentle Grade 2 rapids, hidden side creeks, rock canyons and towering ridgelines. Camp under willows or on sandy beaches.
Wind through the river's braided channels, with time for exploring, fishing and spotting wildlife. Camp among native mānuka with mountain views.
A fast-paced whitewater finale as the Clarence surges toward the Pacific, then transport back with memories to last a lifetime.
