One of New Zealand's greatest river journeys
The Ultimate River Journey – Waiau Toa / Clarence River
A True Aotearoa Expedition
Where wilderness, fine food, and riverside living come together. The Waiau Toa / Clarence River offers one of New Zealand's longest and most scenic multi-day river journeys. Flowing between the Inland and Seaward Kaikōura Ranges, this expedition is a chance to escape the noise, embrace simplicity, and travel deep into the heart of the South Island's wild beauty.
This isn't about conquering rapids or seeking adrenaline—it's about connection, rhythm, and experiencing the profound peace of traveling with the river.
A Journey Like No Other
From the moment we leave the road and push off into the river, everything slows down. The focus shifts to the essentials—fun, food, fire, and flow. Surrounded by sweeping mountain views, you'll feel connected to the land, the river, and your crew.
Our self-sufficient expedition style means everything we need is carried on the rafts. We set up camp each night in stunning natural locations—wherever the river takes us—cooking meals over open fires and swapping stories under a sky full of stars.
What to Expect
The Clarence River begins in the alpine tussock country of Marlborough's remote backblocks. Over five days, the river winds through dramatic rock canyons, past towering ridgelines and wild braided sections, before finally surging towards the Pacific Ocean in a fast-paced whitewater finale.
