Spilling from the mountains of Lewis Pass, the Maruia flows through beech forest and remote farmland before joining the Buller just outside Murchison. It's close to town, but it feels like a real backcountry escape.
your two days
Pack your dry bags at our Murchison base, suit up and head to the river. Paddle through forest and farmland, stop for lunch, then enjoy fun Grade 2 to 3 rapids. Evening at a riverside camp with campfire stories, fishing and a sky full of stars.
Wake to birdsong and a hearty breakfast, then break camp. More rapids and scenic pools, with time to paddle, swim or drift, before the river opens into the valley and we head back to Murchison.
